Today started at 6:30 a.m. Lovely, right? I got up, changed, had a quick breakfast, and went off to school. Jeez Louise, I have never seen so many mopeds in my life! As we rode to school I couldn't take my eyes off the window and kept thinking "Taiwan is so different from Plano, Texas". As soon as I stepped onto Yung-Feng High School, I could see how different it all was. I was desperate to see someone from the delegation and luckly when I walked into the homeroom classroom Page and Kathleen were there. We met everyone in the class and went outside to the balcony. As soon as students from the other classes realized we were there, they all ran out to get at glimpse at us. We were all mini-celebraties!
At 8:30 we went downstairs to their open auditorium to begin the presetation. Their band played three amazing songs for us and then we were on. We lined up just like Mrs. Loretta taught us, presented ourselfs, and began to dance. The kids went MAD. They were clapping and screaming, and cheering - it was a lot to take in but it made us all smile. As hard as it is to believe, they went even crazier when we did the Cupid Shuffle. We made the principle, a few teachers, our host siblings, and other students dance it with us. They LOVED it!
After the presentation we got a quick tour of the school and were given our schedules for the day. I lucked out and got Kathleen as my buddy. We went to English first. The kids had prepared a song (the theme of Spongebob Squarepants) and a couple of dances for us to Lady Gaga which we quickly learned they adore. After their little show we played a game so that they could get to know us better. Once that period ended Katheleen and I went Athletics were we learned KONG FU!!! That was most definately one of my favorite moments of the day. After athletics we went to history class. They were SUPER DUPER sweet. We played games were they taught us how to say phrases in Chinese, some of the students danced for us, others played Taiwanese intruments, and ambushed us with beautiful presents and yummy food. Once history was over we went to have lunch with the principle of the school. We all talked about what we had done and just caught up. After we were all done we went to Confucious class where we played even more Taiwanese games. Katheleen and I learned how to play the Taiwanese version of telephone and musical chairs. Then we all had a dance party and got even more gifts. Once that ended we went to Housekeeping Management and learned how to make a special kind of green tea. Over all, today has been simply awesome.
What shocked me the most was how much the students idolized us! My cheeks STILL hurt from smiling for pictures. They would all just walk up and say "can we please take a picture with you" and after the click of the camera another student would come up. Then they would thank us for coming to their school and when I thanked them for they hospitality they would shake their heads, say no, and giggle. Taiwanese people are so nice and just caring. The funniest part of the day was when we first walked into the school. People would stare and at me and when I would say hello or good moring, they would just giggle and run away. And when the girls saw that boys, oh my gosh, they would just giggle non-stop and if they were brave enough they would ask for a picture or e-mail address. Also the girl students would not stop asking Kathleen and I if we had boyfriends. We would respond no and immideatly they would ask us who in the class we liked or thought was cute. We would just laugh and avoid the question. Then we would ask then if they had a boyfriend and they would go off and tell us all about them. I love how teenage girls all over the world are somehow alike.
So tonight Kathleen, Page, Ethan, dustin, and I (along with our host siblings) are going out to dinner and explore downtown. I am CRAZY excited to see what the city is like but I will miss the ceremony of The World Cup along with the first game! However, I think it will be worth it considering TRUE Taiwanese teenagers will be showeing us what their life is like.
